Special Places to stay : French hotels, Châteaux & Other Places
François Benoist’s mother inherited La Potardière from her father and in 1990 entrusted her son with taking care of it – and making it pay for its keep. Luckily, François is an architect specialising in restoring old buildings. They live in a creeper-covered wing of the château with their four children: Camille, Alexis, Noëlle and Emeline. In fact one of the most appealing features of La Potardière is a brochure history written in the form of a letter from all six of them.

François’s grandfather built up a successful centre for training show jumpers alongside an established thoroughbred stud. After 10 years of empty stables, in 1992 La Potardière began taking stallions for the summer months, when owners bring mares from all over France.

Most of the rooms look out onto peacefully grazing horses. Bedrooms are just what you would hope for : a graceful mixture of pretty and elegant, wood and flowers. What a place for a horse-mad child! But all children will love it here: fields, a safe pool, even a Wendy House full of toys. A superb welcome. Group dinner can be organised.
