History of the Haras de la Potardière

Hidden in the outskirts of Maine and Anjou on a curvy road between Crosmières and Bazouges leading downwards to the Loir, in the countryside and gleaming over the small valley of Argance, draws up the Haras de la Potardière.
Of the Antique manor, only the principal building remains after the important renovation campaign carried out in the  XVIIth century.
In around 1850, the castle was entirely renovated. The architect accomplished an astonishing work of design: the arrival frontage , facing southwards, is preserved traditional; the frontage facing North was decorated with picturesque turrets, the traditional French garden was replaced by an English style park.
A body of dependence néo XVII comes to replace the old low court of the home seigneuriale and finally a neo-gothic vault is built to 150 m of the castle.

The history of the families who lived La Potardière can be quite accurately  reconstituted thanks to archives which have been transmitted to us. In 1330 the owners are Fouquier de Meslay to whom the families of Tremblay, Le Vacher de la Chaize , De Villeneuve will succeed.
In 1789, the property of La Potardière passes on to Cardin Bret. The revolutionary period was animated; the house was sold as an emigrant good and finally repurchased by Bret in 1801, who will conserve it.

Acquired by Armand Dorise in 1940, the property will be transmitted by heritage to my mother, who in 1990 entrusted us with the responsibility of caring for this grand home of Anjou.

The house must earn its living today. It is for this reason that the property was completely reorganized and is now composed of :
The Castle, with its large traditional living rooms on the ground floor. These living rooms can be used for the organisation of  receptions and meetings for families up to 40 persons, 7 rooms comprising 2 suites have been renovated. We live with our four children, the small part covered with creepers.

The Stud farm has been entirely refurbished into grand reception halls having a capacity of up to 360 personnes. Further more, 10 spacious bedrooms compose the first storey of the stud farm.

The national stud farm is composed of stables, a reproduction facility, an echography chamber, a trotting area and of course the stud court where every spring, 2 pure English breed, a trotter, a “selle français” and a “poney souffleur”.

The property has conserved 2 of the 13 farmhouses at the beginning of the last century. These 2 houses benefit of a breath taking view. They have been fully restored.

The equestrian vocation of the property started after world war 1 as the Juge family became the owners.

The property was then acquired by my grandfather who, apart from breeding, set out to train the pure breeds.

During 40 years, many tenants would occupy the property: P.Hamel, Vladimir Hall, Maurice François.

These specialists of hurdle races won the most prestigious races organised in the western side of France.

For 10 years the horse boxes would remain empty due to an economic crisis.

In 1992, the Potardière restaured the breeding activity and became a satellite station of the National Haras, famous institut, heritage of Colbert.

This activity consists in bringing in during 5 months, mid-March up to mid-July, 5 studs for the purpose of reproduction coupled with mares from all over France.

After the reproductive season, the studs return to L’île Briand situated in the Lions D’Angers.
